Welcome, Captain Kevin McCabe!
On Thursday, 23 February 2006, the Albuquerque Police Department introduced their new Captain. The event was at the North East Area Command, which is located at 8201 Osuna NE, one block west of Wyoming.
You may remember that day. Some of the streets around La Cueva High School were blocked off while the police were conducting a door-to-door search for a burglar. La Cueva had a lock-down for early arrivals, and a 2-hour delay for students attempting to reach the school at normal times.
The new Captain and other officers provided a very detailed update for us on the happenings. They had just succeeded in shutting down "Gotham City," which had been causing them a lot of calls. They also explained how they dealt with someone who tried to break into a house by sliding down the chimney -- and got stuck!
They feel they have been making progress lately. As an example, the number of "meth" labs shut down was: 92 in 2003, 54 in 2004 and 32 in 2005. The reduction in number is because fewer are being created in Albuquerque.
Part of the progress is due to a new strategic method. They identify the "top five" or top few criminals, and give them more concentrated attention, to get them off the street. Does it work? Yes! In particular, the burglar they were looking for around La Cueva turned out to be on their list. They nabbed him this afternoon!
Someone from the audience asked: "What is your biggest problem?" The answer: the revolving door of the justice system. They arrest many people, often multiple arrests of the same person, only to see them out on the street again very soon.
